Before Making a Decision

Deciding on a security system can become very burdensome and confusing. The multitude of different types of systems, cabling and cameras is more than enough to drive the general consumer crazy due to the myriad of technical jargon as well as the slight differences that may exist across several models. Before looking through our variety of systems, be sure to run through a checklist of what you may or may not need. Here is a short example of the key questions that I would normally ask myself before deciding.

  • 1. What am I going to be using this for?
  • 2. Will my cameras be installed mainly indoors? Outdoors? Or Both?
  • 3. What level of quality in video do I need to fit the goal I’m trying to achieve?
  • 4. How many areas will require surveillance?
  • 5. Is there a high possibility of vandalism on my cameras?
  • 6. Do I need sound?
  • 7. How far will each camera have to be?
These are just a few questions that I would personally take into consideration when purchasing a security system. There are many factors that play into purchasing a security system, and as such you want to be sure that you’re getting exactly what you need. The worst thing you want to do is to realize you needed an extra cable or an extra camera after something has happened.

Which 16 Channel Samsung security system would you recommend?

First off, you want to ask yourself if a 16 channel system is necessary. Do you see yourself utilizing a full 16 channel system immediately or expanding to make use of it sometime in the future? If yes, move on to our full list of 16 channel security camera systems. As with any type of electronic, security systems are no strangers to changes and upgrades. Our models are constantly being updated, and new models are always being built and released. Here are the recommendations as of the year 2014.

Hybrid-HD 16 Channel Systems

If you’re looking for a camera system that can support up to 16 cameras with high definition video footage, you want to take a look at the SDH-P5080N and SDH-V5100. These two systems are the top of the line hybrid-HD systems that come with a package of 4 HD cameras recording at 720p as well as 12 additional BNC ports for standard definition (SD) cameras. We will look at the products in a few separate categories.

Package Specifications

  • The SDH-V5100N offers a 2 TB hard drive along with 4 HD cameras (SDC-8340BC) and 6 SD cameras (SDC-5340). The 4 HD cameras record at 720p, and the 6 SD cameras record at 600TVL. They come with 60 feet of cables for each camera for a total of 10 cables [4 RJ45 (SEA-C200) + 6 BNC Cables (SEA-C100)].
  • The SDH-P5080N offers a 1 TB hard drive along with 4 HD cameras (SDC-8340BC) and 4 SD cameras (SDC-5340). The 4 HD cameras record at 720p, and the 6 SD cameras record at 600TVL. They also come with 60 feet of cables for each camera for a total of 8 cables [4 RJ45 (SEA-C200) + 4 BNC Cables (SEA-C100)].
  • A very important aspect that you need to remember is that these two packaged systems come with enough power splitters to power only 8 SD cameras. You’ll have to purchase additional power supplies to run 4 additional SD cameras if you decide to utilize all 12 SD camera channels.
Given this comparison, I’d say the best choice would be the SDH-V5100N for the price as you it is equivalent to receiving two additional cameras along with a larger hard drive for only $100 more.

Our SDS 5000 Series systems are a step down from the SDH 5000 systems, and they are a full 16 BNC channel system. The cameras included are the SDC-5340BC cameras (except the SDS-V5080N system) recording at 600TVL. The main difference you’ll notice within the different packages is the number of cameras included as well as the hard drive size. See the comparison chart below.

As of right now, the cheapest option would be the SDS-P5080N. The affordability along with the 8 cameras tend to be a very popular choice as well as a recommended one for customers looking for a high resolution 16 channel camera system on a budget. As you can tell, the cameras all record at 600TVL and the systems have roughly all the same specifications except for the SDS-P5100N which has a 2 TB hard drive as opposed to the 1 TB. Another big difference would be the SDS-V5080N system that boasts all the same qualities as the SDS-P5080N but with different cameras with lesser night vision range. As a result, the most recommended unit here would be the SDS-P5080N as it is cost efficient and has an ample amount of cameras for most customers along with the option of expanding the camera numbers in the future.
  • A very important aspect that you need to remember is that these packaged systems come with enough power splitters to power only 12 SD cameras. You’ll have to purchase additional power supplies to run 4 additional SD cameras if you decide to utilize all 16 SD camera channels.

Standard Resolution 16 Channel System

If you’re security needs aren’t too severe and a lower resolution system would be more than enough for you, the SDE 5000 Series systems may be worth taking a look at. The comparison chart is available below.

Despite being a lower resolution than the high resolution systems, the SDE-5001N is one of our best sellers over the past 2 years due to its full RJ45 connectivity. Extension wires for this system tends to be cheaper than your standard BNC cables as well as the general opinion on the easiness of wire running the RJ45 cables provide. Despite the resolution difference, the SDE-5001N is a more than capable system that provides clear video that is well fit for the needs of those looking for a simple solution to security issues. The SDE-5003 is our budget 16 channel system that offers the full 16 channel BNC system equipped with the lower resolution cameras that are mainly good for simple monitoring and security. If crisp and accurate detail of items at a certain distance is a need of yours, this system is not the way to go, but it is a more than capable system if your needs run in the vicinity of general surveillance.

Overall, you’re looking at systems that range in different specifications that are based on very specific needs. An overall recommendation would obviously lead you to the hybrid HD systems, but by gauging your necessary requirements, you can utilize these comparisons to make the right decision in your purchase of a 16 channel security system.

Which 8 channel Samsung security system would you recommend?

If you take a look at our 8 channel security systems, you’ll notice that they’re set up in the exact same way as the 16 channel security camera systems. You’ve got your SDH series ranging all the way down to the SDE series, all made and packaged to fit your needs. I’ll go ahead and break it up into categories just like the 16 channel security systems above.

Hybrid-HD 8 Channel Systems

If you’re looking for a camera system that can support up to 8 cameras with high definition video footage, you want to take a look at the SDH-P4080N and SDH-P4040N. These two systems are the top of the line hybrid-HD systems that come with a package of 4 HD cameras recording at 720p as well as 4 additional BNC ports for standard definition (SD) cameras. Below is the side by side comparison of the two systems.

The two systems here differ only by $100. The biggest difference between the two packaged systems is the cameras that come with the system. The SDH-P4080N comes with all camera slots filled with 4 HD cameras and 4 SD cameras. The system itself has a 2 TB hard drive along with the necessary cables for each camera included. The SDH-P4040 comes with only 4 HD cameras along with no power supply for your possible 4 BNC camera slots. The recommended choice here is clear as the SDH-P4080N system packs a greater punch and comes with much more equipment justified by a $100 difference. With 4 HD cameras and 4 SD cameras, you have no need to purchase separate cameras. You are ready to go from the moment you receive your package with 8 cameras to fill up your 8 channel system.

Standard High Resolution 16 Channel Systems

Our SDS 4000 Series systems are a step down from the SDH 4000 systems, and they are a full 8 BNC channel system. The cameras included are the SDC-5340BC cameras (except the SDS-V4040N and SDS-V4041 systems) recording at 600TVL. The main difference you’ll notice within the different packages is the number of cameras included as all of our SDS 4000 Series systems come with a 500GB hard drive.

As you can imagine, the SDS-P4080N price on this comparison displays a sales price that makes it on par with the other models. Normally, you would see a gap of $100 between each system here. The best choice among these three is the SDS-P4080 as it comes with a full package of 8 SD cameras along with its respective wires. Unlike the other cameras in the remaining SDS 4000 series systems, these cameras have a night vision range of 82ft as opposed to the 50ft.

If you take a look at the SDS-V4041N and the SDS-V4040N, you’ll notice that they are practically the same system. There is a slight difference in the chipset of the system where the DVR in the SDS-V4041N has an HDMI port in the back of the system that allows you to connect your DVR to a viewing monitor via HDMI. Unlike the SDS-V4041N, the SDS-V4040N does not have an HDMI port in which case a user will have to use a VGA cable instead.

Standard Resolution 16 Channel System

If you’re security needs aren’t too severe and a lower resolution 8 channel system would be more than enough for you, the SDE 4000 Series systems may be worth taking a look at. The comparison chart is available below.

These two units are very similar units to the SDE-5001N and SDE-5003N. The main difference between the pairs is the amount of cameras that is included within each package. Being a manufacturer Refurbished model, the SDE-4001N serves several purposes. The system is cost efficient for those looking for several cameras on an 8 channel system supporting an RJ45 connection. As the trend of utilizing purely RJ45 cables is being phased out, the SDE-4001N is one of the last 8 channel Samsung RJ45 systems. If you’ve already got wiring from a previous tenant or had them run through your home or office a while back, this may be the right system for you.

Which 4 channel surveillance DVR system would you recommend?

The 4 channel systems show a much smaller variety in comparison to the 8 channel and 16 channel systems. With no HD system, we are left with our SDS and SDE series systems for comparison. See comparison chart below.

Category SDS-P3040N SDS-V3040N SDE-3003N SDS-3004N

Of the four systems, the SDS-P3040N is the best system available. With its competitive pricing along with high resolution cameras, this system packs quite a punch for its size. Again, If you’re looking for the RJ45 connectivity, you’d be better off with the SDE-3003N, but if cabling is not a problem for you, the SDS-P3040N is the best 4 channel system amongst the 4 camera systems. The difference between the SDS-P3040 and the SDS-V3040 is in the cameras. The SDC-5440BC is a camera of similar quality when comparing resolutions, but the lower night vision distance puts it on a lower tier when compared to the SDC-5340BC included in the SDS-P3040N.

Our budget system in this category is the SDE-3004N system. With 4 cameras and a 500GB hard drive only for $200, it is hard to say that you’re not getting your money’s worth. Although the resolution is lower than the rest, it is more than capable of general surveillance if great detail isn’t your greatest concern. The cameras still show a great picture even at 480 TVL, and it is a great buy for those seeking general surveillance under a strict budget.
